Standing up for young americans

COLLEGE ENROLLMENT DOWN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 15 YEARS

THE FACTS

  • In total, college enrollment declined .2 percent, while it dropped 2.23 percent at community colleges and 7 percent at for-profit two-year schools.

  • It’s possible that numbers have dropped because laid-off workers who enrolled in school to gain new skills or wait-out the recession have since left to find jobs.

  • Alternatively, the decline can be linked to the rising price of college tuition that has made college unaffordable for many students.

WHY WE SHOULD CARE

  • As college rates increase, more young Americans make the tough decision not to get a higher education.

  • Studies show that college affordability is one of the issues most important to the Millennial generation this election.

OUR TIME OPINION

We should be working to ensure that young Americas have affordable access to a quality education and that students don’t have to defer enrolling in college because they don’t have the money.
