COULD TOUGHER VOTING LAWS SQUELCH THE YOUTH VOTE?
Proponents of voter ID and registration laws say the laws are intended to combat voter fraud.
Since the last election, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Wisconsin and Texas and other states have tried to limit or ban the use of student IDs as voter identification.
In Florida, lawmakers tried to limit ‘‘third party’’ organizations, including student groups, from registering new voters.
WHY WE SHOULD CARE
These new VoterID laws could significantly limit the ability of young Americans to vote in elections – especially those who don’t drive and consequently don’t already have driver’s licenses or other forms of government issued identification.
OUR TIME OPINION
States should avoid imposing unnecessarily restrictive voter eligibility requirements if doing so will disenfranchise citizens – be it young Americans, the poor, minorities, or the elderly – of their ability to vote.
