THE FACTS

  • Creating informed and engaged citizens was an original purpose of public schools.

  • With the push for education reform by both Republicans and Democrats, civics classes have been set aside.

  • The United States now ranks 120th out of 169 democracies in voter turnout.

WHY WE CARE

  • Students do not automatically become informed and engaged citizens on their 18th birthday.

  • A civics education is key to an effective democracy.
