CONTROL YOURSELF
THE FACTS
12 people were killed and 58 injured in the Aurora, Colorado shootings on July 20th.
More than 30,000 Americans injure themselves with guns each year.
Having a gun in a house doubles the risk that a household member will commit suicide and Americans are 50% more likely to be shot dead by his or her own hand than by a criminal.
WHY WE SHOULD CARE
In spite of the dangers of guns, 75% of Americans want to keep the right to own guns.
Glamorization of violent crime in the media convinces many that owning a gun is necessary, even though violent crime rates have decreased since 2000.
OUR TIME OPINION
In light of the recent shootings in Aurora, Colorado, we should change our gun laws to reflect things everyone agrees on– for example, preventing weapons from ending up in the wrong hands.
