OUR TIME DAILY TRANSLATION
We've heard you say it many times: "Politics is like a foreign language." Well, we agree.
Each week, we summarize, simplify, and interpret different major news stories and how they affect our generation. We'll give you our take, and you can decide for yourself.
JOBS ARE BETTER
THE FACTS
The US government runs the Unemployment Insurance Program which gives money for a temporary time to the 12.8 million Americans who recently lost their jobs.
According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), this program alone costs $156 billion every year.
Unemployment Insurance program = $156 billion per year. Divide that by 12.8 million unemployed Americans and you get a total of $12,187 per person per year.
WHY WE SHOULD CARE
$12,000 could be enough to keep someone living with the bare minimum– but for $13,000 (plus a $5,500 student loan reimubrsement) we can create one national service job through Americorps and provide people with a job, a new set of skills, and an opportunity to build their future.
OUR TIME OPINION
We can help reduce the deficit by investing in National Service and give young Americans the opportunity to learn critical professional skills, repair communities in need, and begin to pay off student loan debt. Learn more at www.onemillionnewjobs.org
