THE FRENCH SAY AU REVOIR TO CHILD BEAUTY PAGEANTS
- This week, French lawmakers put a ban on judging children under the age of 16 on their physical appearance in beauty contests.
- This is part of the new “equality bill” which also included legislation to tackle unequal pay, domestic violence and to encourage fathers to take parental leave.
As a means to combat the “hyper-sexualization” of young girls, anyone who tries to organize a pageant could get two years in jail and a fine of up to $40,000 American dollars.
Why We Should Care
Not only are child pageants creepy, but they promote a strict definition of beauty and cause our youth to miss out on the joys of being a kid.
